Improvement of the smile is considered one of the most important treatment objectives in orthodontics. Combined etiologic factors such as skeletal (vertical maxillary excess), dental (overeruption or improper torque), periodontal (gingival overgrowth), soft tissue (short philtrum) or functional origins (lip incompetency, excessive smile curtain) result in excessive gingival display. The speaker will introduce proper diagnosis and etiology-based strategies to improve the gummy smile. Total arch intrusion for Class II treatment along with hard and soft tissue managements to improve macro, mini and micro-esthetics of the gummy smile will be discussed.
Learning Objectives:
After this session, attendees will be able to:
Diagnose the complex characteristics of the gummy smile base on its etiology.
Recognize biomechanical strategies and non-surgical treatment modalities such as total arch intrusion to improve adult Class II gummy smile.
Identify indications for soft tissue managements combined with orthodontic treatment.
