Mandibular setback surgery with clockwise rotation is often needed to improve the protruded mandibular border. Rotation (posterior impaction) of the maxilla is needed for the rotational mandibular setback. Orthodontic intrusion of maxillary posterior teeth can replace the posterior impaction of the maxillary for rotational mandibular setback. Intrusion of both maxillary and mandibular posterior teeth on the non-deviated side can replace the maxillary surgery for canting correction. Reducing double-jaw surgery into single-jaw surgery with orthodontic intrusion reduces the patients' burden and risk therefore increasing the acceptance of surgical orthodontic treatment.
Learning Objectives:
After this session, attendees will be able to:
Explain the situations requiring rotational mandibular setback surgery for the treatment of mandibular prognathism.
Explain how orthodontic intrusion can replace maxillary surgery in the treatment of mandibular prognathism.
Explain the method of molar intrusion for the replacement of the maxillary surgery.
