Orthodontists will often see patients in their practice that come with the chief complaint that their bite is changing, sometimes during or following orthodontic treatment. There are many possible scenarios for this occurrence, with the etiology usually being structures distant to the teeth. This lecture will discuss some of these etiologies (the TMJ and airway in particular) and show the clinician how cone-beam CT can be used to evaluate for risk factors for future bite changes radiographically. Diagnosis of these conditions is important for the long term success of dental treatment, whether it is restorative, orthodontic or prosthodontic.
Learning Objectives:
After this session, attendees will be able to:
Understanding that occlusal changes are not always dental in nature, and learning to diagnose the etiologies of these bite changes.
Learn about the role of the TMJ and airway in changing occlusion and how to evaluate these changes radiographically.
Identify some common TMJ pathology radiographically and your role in bite changes.
