Multisegment Le Fort 1 osteotomies are complicated and, at times, difficult to stabilize. The literature shows instability in three dimensions with the transverse dimension being the most problematic. There are surgical and pre- and post-operative techniques that can improve the stability of maxillary expansion. Our study revealed that osseous expansion can be extremely stable with statistically insignificant relapse of the maxillary segments when following a specific protocol. The techniques and data will be presented.
Learning Objectives:
After this session, attendees will be able to:
Outline the anatomic factors that need to be addressed to increase maxillary surgical expansion transverse stability.
Review the intraoperative techniques that improve maxillary surgical expansion transverse stability.
Evaluate the pre- and post-operative orthodontic actions that help to improve and maintain maxillary expansion.
